A Legacy of Quilting

As a young girl, I was taught the art of quilting by my grandmothers and great-grandmothers from the mountains of northeast Georgia. As they were sharecroppers and mountain women, quilting wasn’t a hobby - these items were needed for every day use. They took incredible care and pride in their creations. I do my best to carry on this tradition, and am proud to share The Quilter’s Mercantile with you.

My Grandmothers and Great-Grandmothers taught me the foundation of quilting, how to select materials, and techniques to the make designs my own.

I spent summer evenings with them in fellowship and service making quilts. My mother carried on this tradition creating incredibly artistic ones with applique and satin binding. As I continue the same, I also love quilts using repurposed clothing, quality 100% cotton, and ones created with silky materials .

I learned to read patterns. Moving from taking a pile of fabric and sewing it into a functional item, I studied the patterns of others. I would take elements and apply them to my style of quilting. I enjoy not just the craft, but the math and science behind quilting’s art form.

Quilting has been a part of me my entire life. After completing my enlistment in the USAF, I began making quilts for my own children. Then family, friends… and community events.

In 2022, I found myself looking at an opportunity to buy a small-town USA Main Street America building in my husband’s hometown. As we navigate the process of downtown revitalization, a beautiful spot opened in a sweet town neighboring where we live in Virginia.

I jumped at the chance. The space would be filled with beautiful American made fabrics, handcrafted wooden accessories, notions, patterns from individual designers - and finally, a studio space.

That vision is becoming reality.

Moving into 300 E Main Street, Suite A We have begun moving into this old depot building in Remington, VA, being embraced by the wonderful town. These exposed beams will soon display sample quilts and the windows will showcase our lovely wares. Target opening date of the brick and mortar shop here is late September, with details to follow.

I purchased 104 E Harris Street from the Town of Eaton in the summer of 2022. In my husband’s youth, the space was Harold’s Store, where he would be sent to retrieve a quick item. Prior to it being a general store it was Half Moon Diner, where patrons would enjoy being served sodas and burgers at their counter. Those days are long gone, and the building stands abandoned. It is partially demolished, and what remains is uninhabitable. As improvements are made, updates will be shared here and on our socials.

I look forward to being a part of it all.
